Subject: Vanagons in Victoria

Hi gang,
Recently spent a week in Victoria BC visiting friends. When I lived there I
had never owned a vanagon (I had a 78 Westy) and so didn't pay that much
attention to them. I was pleasantly shocked to see how many there were ---
in the first afternoon of driving and walking around Victoria I saw more
than 20 vanagons ---- mostly Westies. My buddy was killing himself laughing
as I kept saying "Look -- there's another one!!" I noticed that the majority
were air-cooled, which I found a bit surprising. Maybe the need for a
working heater is less desparate in the temperate Victoria climate. I also
made a pilgrimage to Malahat Auto Parts which has a 50 or 60 wrecked
vanagons still in captivity --- some pics at these links.

One thing we found odd is that all the Westy interiors and tops were gone
--- the guy behind the counter explained that a local Westy rental company
had come and bought and removed every Westy part they had on the yard. Too
bad, as I was looking for some Westy bits and have ordered obscure used bits
from these guys in the past.
Cheers,
Doug
