For the record re rotating the engine -- an off-list tip from John Hawk was to pry the torque converter fins. That's what worked for me. I can't get at the front of the alternator without taking shrouds off, and I don't have a big enough socket anyway, so prying with a l-o-n-g screwdriver was best. I lay inside on the folded-down back seat, and pried the engine round one fin at a time from above (there's a handy slot with a casting just ready-made to lever against,) feeling for the bolts with my finger.
