Just wondering what Manuals you recommended for a newbie for an 88 Vanagon?

I know the manual that comes with the van is basic, I am wondering what the
next step is. I found the official VW Mechanics Manual over my head, I am
the type that needs detailed illustrations or photošs with text
explanations. 

Any ideas?

Best way to learn about fixing stuff yourself?

DVD/Video Series?
