the 40 hp engine has no letter before the serial numbers and the intake manifold bolts to the head straight down not at an angle as the 1300 and up would the 1300 has an F before the numbers and it could be a 15 or 1600 so. I would next check the part number on the head last 3 numbers would read 373 B if the heads are 1300. 1500 and 1600 heads should read 373A forty horse heads would be 373 or 371
