Sometimes not. Personal experience many years ago.... Driving a virtually brand new 1967 Plymouth Valiant to go skiing. On the way home, coming down the pass, car warmed up and heater blasting, defroster full on (warm windshield). We were passed by an 18 wheeler that splashed a lot (I mean a whole bunch) of slush onto the windshield. Instant crazing of the entire windshield. Not actually broken but when light shown through it, night or day, it looked like you were seeing a fine crystal structure everywhere. I took the car to the dealer where we had purchased it and showed them the problem. They agreed to replace the windshield. (I'm not sure I gave them all the details). They replaced it and commented that the window installer said that as he was removing the old windshield it turned into a million pieces, only held together by the plastic laminate in the middle.
