Cindy,

The kind of tires and the tread they have makes a HUGE difference. For myself, I have Michelin XCA's -205-75 R14 6ply tires on my 88 GL. Wonderful tire for my purposes. Steady as a rock in a breeze. But I will tell you, I can get stuck in wet grass on flat ground with these XCA's, an on pavement the slighest grade wet with a little rain and some road film at a stop sign will totally do me in. Yet when I lived in Alaska, in 20 years I never had anything other than standard tires - not even snow tires, and never had any problems ....... unitl I bought my Vanagon. The first wintery day with some ice/snow on the road and I spun out in the middle of the highway doing 50 mph going up a slight hill. I went straight to the local tire dealership and bought studded tires. No more problems EVER in winter. Of course they were legal in Alaska then - I don't know about now - and I used the heck out of them, then took them off in April when breakup began.

I can't reciommend a good winter tire, but I'll bet there are those on the list that can, based on personal experience, and those recommendations are worth their weight in gold.

Come 'on Gang! Give Cindy a hand here as to some good snow tires for her van.

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver
