I take a piece of thick paper and fold it in half. Then slip in into the slot of the faceplate, wrapped over a lever, just sticking out of the slot but extending in over the thicker part of the lever. Then when you pull the lever out the thicker inner part of the lever won't catch on the edge of the faceplate and break it when the lever suddenly pulls free.
