Tom,
In December of 1997 I ran in the Honolulu Marathon, the race starts at 5:00am so that runners will be able to avoid the midday heat. I was quite amused at the runners I saw wearing clear plastic trash bags over their shorts & shirts in an effort to keep warm prior to the start. Some of them were still wearing their bags after the first three miles had past. It was 60F at 5:00am and 75F by 9:00am. The temp. may have been cool for the locals, but those of us from Alaska were quite warm, and the Fairbanks runners even more so. We flew to Honolulu with some of them and it was -21F when they left Fairbanks, Anchorage had only been in the +teens.
