Problematic emissions controls? Surely you jest. I've had 4 2.1's in the last 15 years. the 1987 I'm driving now is the same one I bought in October, 1990 .It's had one temp sensor, 1 fuel filter, fuel lines, 2 -O2 sensors, one fuel pressure regulator and a couple of tune ups including 1 new set of plug wires.. This summer it would only go 90 mph. I then remembered it had the 2 ladders on the top. (Still crazy after all these years.) Driving on a Saturday trip today after about 4 hours driving our 91 started stuttering and eventualy lost power and died. It surprised me so much that it took several minutes of brain storming to figure out that it probably was just fuel tank crud in my PRE-FILTER (the part VW left off). A few good raps on the case made it work okay for the remaining 40 miles home. I'll have to change it out and dissect it before I set out on any more trips.Damned If I was going to change that filter on the side of the road in a blinding snow storm! Oh, it's not like I baby the 91 either. It's been in 14 states and 2 provinces this year. Quebec City to Phoenix in 2 trips. Al Brase

I've been running a Weber carb since 1998, I'm not so enthusiastic about going 'back' to EFI.
