For my general education as I shop around I'm wondering how serious
coolant leaks from head gaskets in water cooled Vanagons should be
considered.


If a vehicle is running okay and typically only requires the addition of
a small amount of coolant every so often is this something that requires
removal/reassembly of the heads with new gaskets?  Does this typically
precede total head gasket failure?
