Steve, I'm sure you are right and your warning to look for evidence of
routine maintenance is probably the key here.  In the late '90's I was
witness to a four month wait for parts and $6000 fiasco with an auto
transmission in about a '94 EVC and a strong warning from a service writer
at a major and reputable VW dealer here in Seattle (personal friend) about
the early Eurovans.  But there has been little information about their
history and reliability here on the Vanagon oriented lists.  What you say
makes sense.  Thanks.
