You're definitely not alone.

I actually lobbied for and eventually sold our '95 4Runner because the first time my wife said, "we should take the 4runner camping this weekend," intuition told me that this was the beginning of an attempt, probably unintentional but still real, to render my beloved Vanagon obsolete.

The 4Runner had to be removed immediately.

She now drives a Passat. I recommended it because it is, in more obvious ways, not so much a camping vehicle.
