I'd bet that it's just that the "used, assumed good" transmission is in some way bad. I might be tempted say a transmission was "assumed good" if I thought I could sell it that way. Or perhaps it WAS good and the valves are just clotted up from sitting around too long. You might want to try swapping in the valve body from your old tranny. That's a lot easier than pulling the whole thing again, and who knows, it might do the trick. If it were me (and it WAS me 6 months ago), I'd get a rebuilt and pop that in myself.
