Subject: '80 air cooled - rough idle, stall culprits - repair?
Content-type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Okay, I'm annoyed at myself...

Every time I try to be proactive I upset my Vanagon.

I installed a new Cat. to replace the gutted one that went bad recently a few weeks back.

Idle was bad and went to worse, noticed what looked like a little dampness around injector #3 had increased so I ordered a replacement rebuilt to be safe and not go up in flames for the new year.

...today the temp. here got above 40 degrees so I put it in, checked the dwell, and managed to set timing but when timing approached the spec of 7.5 BTDC with dist. vacuum off idle got rough eventually stalling. That's how I've left it now.

Recent history includes replacement of the temp sensor in the head about 2 years ago, replacement of two injectors with rebuilts this past spring, replacement of the cat and the third injector in the past two weeks.

(I'm thinking I should just replace the fourth injector to eliminate it as a weak link.)

I'm getting ready to run the harness with my voltmeter per Bently which I haven't done in nearly three years because I can't fathom where the problem is.

bad temp sensor again? air or vacuum leak somewhere? not too many culprits at this point I've looked at most of the usual suspects. Idle adjustment screw seems to have an effect but not an easy direct relationship to idle like it should.

At one point I fiddled with the CO adjustment on the AFM blind (without a meter ) but didn't think that would do it...can that actually stall the thing?

any ideas....supposed to be above 40 degrees F. again tomorrow and then back into the 30s until the end of next week. I'm hoping to sort this out before things get frigid and stay that way.
