For an 86 there are 2 whitish wires coming out of a harness that go to the PS switch on the rigid lines at the PS pump.Connect them up to the male spades on the switch, any order. Right angle female spades were used on those wires by the factory because there is limited space.

There are 2 versions of alternator that could be on any waterboxer at this point. The early type had a male spade sticking out the back for the blue wire to attach to. The later version alternator had a small threaded stud sticking out the back. Your 86 came with the later type so the blue wire should have a small ring connector on the end. Since your Syncro is 20 years old, the alternator could have be switched with one that uses the spade connector on the blue wire. Either one is fine. You just have to determine which D+ connector your alternator has, threaded or spade. Then make sure you put that type connector on your blue wire. I have seen so many flaky ends on the blue wire that I would always consider cutting whatever end is there off and putting a new one on.
