Sorry I was away from my computer for a bit.
When you turn your key to the start position ... the coil on the starter
solenoid is energized. The plunger then moves and does two things. One
... it moves the starter gear to mesh with the flywheel and, two ... it
closes the internal switch to supply power to the starter motor. So, if
the starter is grinding ... then the solenoid did its thing and the
starter motor is turning. The grinding sound is probably from the
starter gear not making solid contact with the teeth on the flywheel.
I don't have a Subaru conversion but I understood that the teeth on
some conversion flywheels were problematic.
