I know this may not fit with everyone taste, but back when I had My 86GL I broke the silly fittings on the speakers while sliding them forward. My intent prior to selling that Vanagon was to place a couple of 6x9's on those carpeted enclosures with brackets like the ones found in automotive oscillating fans. That way I would get much larger speakers (IE. sound) and still have a speaker that would slide on and off.

Not doing so I don't know how well this would have worked as the two are vastly different in size and weight.

It doesn't answer your question, but it could be an upgrade.

my .02 cents
