FWIW, when I queried my U.S. dealer source about this, they told me that
they do not list the part number as  discontinued, just backordered (with
VWoA showing something like 1000 on order from Germany).  So I queried my
German dealer source, hoping to get some right from Germany rather than
waiting for the slow wheels of the VW bureaucracy to turn. Alas, they
replied that VW is out of stock in Germany as well - but again they didn't
say they were discontinued.  So hopefully this is a factory backorder,
rather than a product deletion. That is a fairly common scenario so it
wouldn't surprise me (although in some cases the product does subsequently
get moved from backordered to deleted status without the backorder ever
being filled).  In any event, what I was told leaves me cautiously
optimistic.

Of course even best-case it will take a while, so this is little consolation
to someone who needs one right away. :-(
