I'm guessing most such products contain lanolin to protect the skin.

...you used to be able to buy pure lanolin in a container at some pharmacies if you asked the pharmacist for it at the counter...the filled you up a container. I remember it being pretty cheap since it is generic and not branded like the stuff on the shelves in the store.

While using pure lanolin on your hands protects them from all manner of abrasion and dryness the pure stuff leaves you smelling a bit like sheep since it is pure and has no artificial fragrance. I would think it would work well as a lubricant on some types of parts too....slides and latches and maybe others.
