It is the only way to go Matthew, believe it or not, i did over 50 Wasser re-seal in one year.... and i never bought a head gasket kit but always used the complete kit.... a head gasket kit is made to do a patch on one side, only one head..... So please, look carefuly at that page: http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine3.htm it has 3 videos of the job and some pictures of that botom O-Ring replecement procedure.... (yeas, you can stetch the black one/botom one over the sleeve, but MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THOSE GROOVE!!!!!!!!!)

Just put each piston, one by one at is TDC (Top Dead Center) do do the lower O-Ring, you have about 1/4 inche of space betwenn the top part of the water jacket and the botom of the sleeve without any risk of removing the sleeve from the piston.

Those could be helpfull also: http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine1.htm http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine6.htm http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine5.htm

Stay away from removing the sleeve completely from the pistons, it are a pain to put them back in that tight water-jacket http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0046.jpg http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0048.jpg

complete section: http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine2.htm

One other thing!!!! if you can, if you have the valves removing tool: http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0025.jpg http://www.benplace.com/bjp_head2/100_0026.jpg have a look inside, the infamous crack are not in the compression area, but in the valves intake or exhaust portion of the head, at the same time, you can have a look at the valves, seat, guide..... http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=C26%2D000%2D129 for 30$, this is cheap enough.....

Don't hesitate if you need other advices or if your stuck somewhere in the job.... i can send you any picture or video of anything you need, i always have a Wasser engine split open in the shop.

Have a good one, Ben

Ben, in the midst of my first wasserboxer head job. not that difficult really. got the heads off. no cracks between valves. all cylinders still have the grinding marks from the factory. compression, cold, was 135-140 all around, so I'm doing well so far. Anyways, looking at Bentley pg 13.43 it shows two o-rings on the cylinder. Then on page 15.22 it shows just the outer one. So, do i replace both o-rings or just the outer ones + metal ring? the cylinders have not lost their rings, and have seen the o-ring floating around so know i can get to them.

It was cheaper to get the full gasket kit than two head kits. But it adds some questions as to when to use what gasket, etc. Not knowing better, I'd replace ever thing i can get to. I can certainly stretch the inner oring over the cylinder and it will bounce back into shape I'm sure.

anyways, the heads are OK, but the gaskets look like they were cut by the sharp edges of the water housing over time. I've heard that happen, so I'll be sure to knock off that edge before sealing.

Anything else i should know? cheers Matthew
