From your comment you must not know about the Vanagons biggest(?) secret!!

There is an extension built into the Vanagon oil filler tube. It is there to enable you to easily add oil to the engine without having to stand on one foot, pick your nose, screw up your face, and swear in Latin, while the oil dribbles all over due to that horizontal tube installation.

Down inside the filler tube is an extension, and if you just use your thumb and finger to grasp it at the edge - right at the filler tube opening - it will pull right out, and stick out beyond the filler hatch, thus making it much easier to add oil.

I had been driving my '85 GL for two years when I discovered this, and then only by accident. I though I had pulled the filler tube out of the engine block or something. But when I figured out what it was, I was delighted!!
