XL means "extra load".
These are the tires we run on our Westfalia.  I have them mounted on Audi 5000T rims with 13mm spacers.  I am very happy with these tires.   Most of the miles (18,000 km) have been run in the summer and fall but it is very nice to have the "all weather" rating when we get caught in snow.  I have not measured the tread depth but the tires still look new.  I bought the tires at Kal Tire in May 2003.
