I regularly tow my vanagons (manual) with all 4 down and an installed tow
bar...But this is with vanagons that I know function well on a normal
basis...Have towed at least 3k + miles this way...

I had a 2 wheel dolly that let me put the front wheels up and I towed that
way about 1500 miles without incident as well...

When I towed a questionable one 1300 miles I put it with all 4 wheels on a
trailer from Penske...was well worth the peace of mind...
