From my work in Germany with German clients I learned that Europeans in general and Germans in particular were more likely to take off in a car for a meeting than to fly to it like we do here, at least fifteen years ago--about the time the Dehler was sold. Fast cars (generally), better roads and a smaller country make it possible to do business from a vehicle, so there was or even now is a market for a more genteel "executive interior" for the traveling businessman. I also noticed that European towns had money to buy stuff with but often didn't have a travel budget, so if you marketed to them you had to do the visiting as well. The company I worked for, a mapping company, bought a truck (camion) with expandable sides to drive around and do presentations from, a bigger version of the Dehler. This might account for the not-so-rustic demeanor of what we think of only as a camper. Jim |
