Well, back in the 80s I used to install sound systems in vehicles on the weekends, so my real experience in this is now 15 years old. I can pass on what I did in my TriStar and I feel it sounds quite good. I'm not into spending big bucks now on my speakers because I drive a Vanagon and now I am in my mid 30s so the high level notes are not what they used to be and the Vanagon is far from quiet! I purchased a $150 pair of 6.5" mid base that came with some 2" tweeters. The mid base are mounted in the lower door in the stock sheet metal opening. The tweeters are at the bottom of the A-pillars. I found this to provide very good stereo imaging for me and the passenger and it gives me all the clarity that I need. Under the rear seat is a 12" dual voice coil sub-woofer in a simple ported box. The woofer points at the floor with some 2x4s holding the box 2" off of the ground. The amp has cross-over in it that I have turned to about 60Hz. When I crank up the MP3s I can make the mirrors wiggle. I am looking to start the new year off right by upgrading my sound system. I drive a 1985 Weekender with all the original sound system components. I am Down to one speaker working, so I figure it's time to upgrade. I would like to hear from anyone who has upgraded their van, with specifics on what they have put in their vans. I lean to classical, but I will listen to almost anything. I will be including a XM SKYFI2 in the system. I wouldn't say money is no object, but I don't intend to be cheap. Thanks in advance for you help Tim H2OBOXER |
