OK, It's official, it's for sale:
CDN 1991 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia
Canadian Specifications. Burgundy, 305,000 Kms, 5 speed (4 + granny gear) Locking rear
differential. Full Westfalia camping interior: 2 burner stove, 3 way fridge, sink, upper & lower
2 person beds etc.
The van is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You may contact me via p-mail, or call me at
1-902-457-944. Reason for selling: I bought another Syncro, don't need two.
Price: CDN$25,950
The first thing you need to know about this van is that it has a (new) Weber carburetor, not Fuel
Injection. The Weber Carb sits atop a proper VW (European) coolant jacketed, air intake manifold.
You may take this carb news as positive or negative. If you have ever tried to trace down Fuel
Injection problems, you know what a pain it can be. This is a "one wire engine", no Oxygen
sensor, no Air-flow-meter, no ECU (computer), etc. to mess with. Cheaper low pressure fuel pump.
The van runs flawlessly, but one might want to learn a bit about carburetors.
I have owned this van since 1997 and I assumed I'd own it forever, so I have taken very good care
of it.
In an effort to make the van last forever, I have:
Used Synthetic motor oil; oil & filter changed frequently (5,000 kms or sooner).
Used Redline synthetic transmission oil, etc.
Coolant system flushed and new coolant every 2 years.
K&N 'million mile' air filter.
Pertronix Ignition (no contact breaker points, timing stays constant).
Krown.com) anti-rust treatment every year (often stripping the interior of the van for the Krown
treatment). For this reason, the van has nearly no rust. and certainly no active rust.
Propane tank has been sand-blasted and primed and painted with rust inhibiting paint.
Stebro - muffler & tail pipe with Lifetime guarantee.
Tires: 5 new Michelin Agilis 185R14 C) at 283,000 kms. Rotated every 5,000 kms (including spare
tire).
Rear diff lock works and Viscous Coupler (VC) works (does NOT bind, but dash light does not work).
Fridge (AC/DC/Gas), stove, sink all work perfectly (AC/DC/Gas switches are non-standard toggle
switches).
New parts recently installed:
New engine and clutch and clutch plate at 195,000 kms
Coolant (water) pump.
All 4 wheel bearings.
All 4WD drive shaft U-joints, and shaft re-balanced.
NEW Rear seat upholstery, back and seat (2004).
** NEW interior sliding door panel.
Drinking water reservoir pump.
NEW rear heater core, blower/fan, valve and gasket (all new).
NEW front heater core and blower/fan, new flap gaskets.
Brakes, ALL 4 wheels done: drums, rotors, pads & slave cylinders.
New Radio Antenna (proper vanagon style)
Skylight Guy new skylight.
Clutch slave cylinder.
New 3 window pop-top canvas.
What is Non-Standard:
Carburetor: New Weber DFAV (or DFEV) with proper VW (European) coolant jacketed, air intake
manifold (Electronic throat heater, not hooked up).
Rear fiberglass bumper (with 2 minor repairs) was grey/gray now painted back.
Distributor: "009" mechanical-centrifugal spark advance.
AC/DC/Propane switch on fridge; now 3 separate toggle switches.
Sink faucet. I have a standard sink faucet in reserve, but I prefer the simple hose that I have
installed. See photos.
Extra florescent light over sink.
Westy interior light cover is non-standard.
Gas cap is non-locking and from some other VW model, but works fine.
Part of one interior section of propane line is rubber (under sink).
Sony radio: AM/FM/CD (sticks out a hair).
Minor dent in rear sliding door, and panel immediately behind rear sliding door.
The vertical & horizontal cabinets behind the rear seat) are from a 1981 van and have been painted
gray/grey to (nearly perfectly) match the rest of the cabinets.
Cover on rear bed (over engine) is from a 1981 and is brown check pattern.
Straight pipe in place of catalytic converter.
Extras:
Webber Carb jet kit (different sized Main, Air & Idle jets)
Weber carburetor books.
Standard Sink faucet (new, uninstalled).
Catalytic converter (new, un-installed).
009 Coil & 009 distributor.
MANY small parts.
Does NOT work or is absent:
Dash clock not working
Aux-driving lights not working (may just need fuse).
Sink's external water supply is not hooked up.
Sink water reservoir's external fill may not be hooked up.
Speedo cable needs to be installed (I have it, it's just not installed).
Power steering pump, reservoir, not installed (I have the parts).
Some lights on dash, heater, diff lock schematic, cigarette lighter don't work.
No cigarette lighter.
No head-rests on rear seat/bed.
Rear defroster, wiper, squirter doesn't work.
Power mirrors and mirror defroster don't work.
Water reservoir water level indicator is recently 'fixed' by Dave Beril, but not installed, not
tested.
No rear license plate lights are non-existent.
No rear hatch mosquito net.
Other:
Could use a paint job, the rear 1/3 of the van's paint is not the greatest.
