Yup, two of mine developed leaks last year and I did a similar thing. I used a product called 3M Window Weld Resealant. It comes in a pint (?) can and is runny and black. You screw 3M's pump dispenser on the top of the can. The dispenser looks like a pump oiler oil can (Plews), but has a thin removable tip. I bought this stuff at least 15 years back and just now bought a refill. I got the refill at an O' Reilly Auto Parts store. they had to order it. It took about 3 days and cost $21 or so. You inject this stuff around the outside of the seal between the rubber and the body. It's pretty runny, but dries in about a day and the excess needs to be cleaned off a few times. It worked well for me. on both the 82 and 87. the 82 had had a new windshield and rubber back in the mid 90's, so it was softer than the 87's. but they were both leaking.
