When I bought my '85 I had the same thought initially.  I have never
even noticed the shape of the seat while sleeping.  I think the lower
bed in the '85 is very comfortable and I have slept with head to the
front and head to the rear though I usually sleep with head to the rear.

The reason I sleep with my head to the rear is ... it's easier to crawl
in and out of the bed and ... I have a hatch extender that keeps the
hatch open a few inches and gives me fresh air.
