I'm not a mechanic, so this is only an educated guess, but I'd consider the thrust bearing as the culprit. Had this happen on a 1.9L that had a suspicious light tapping or buzzing sound from the flywheel end of the engine. During the post mortem, I realized that the noise had been made by the crankshaft grazing against the inside of the engine case.
