Well Sam, I'm operating off of 15 year old info and an insomniac's
lack of sleep, but I seem to remember these plates as being the same
for both gas and diesel inline engines of that era, including the 1.6L
diesels in the Vanagons.  Though, if there were a difference, you
might find that the plates used in the longitudinally placed engines
like the Dasher/Quantum, Audi Fox/4000 and VW Fox would be more akin
to the Vanagon Diesels.
