i had a similar thing happen a year or so ago but since i didn't have the proper spanner tool when i put the belt on it was to tight and i knew it but ran it that way. anyway it ripped many teeth off the belt but the belt was still on :). the belt was like 10 years old. those belts are reinforced with some type of fiber and all that fiber made a nice big mess for me. fortunately i now have the spanner and more time for maint.
