Check the library section of type2.com. Sean Bartnick has written up the procedure for an 80-83 air cooled vanagon. While there are certainly differences between the air and water cooled version, I think the principle is the same.

Good luck, Jake 82 air cooled Westy

The heater controls in my '84 Westy don't work so good. The one controlling the heat exchanger is stuck on due to a bend in the wire near the lever, and the top one, whatever it's supposed to do, doesn't do anything. How much of a PITA is it to replace these or take them out and lubricate them? Do you have to pull the fascia/ dash? Is there some way to get the black plastic knobs off the control levers and then get the cover plate off? Other suggestions?

Thanks for any advice,

Geza
