any stock vanagon with a poptop has at least the back cabinet that you dont want. so you either have to by a modified one, the link below looks like it could be a good deal, it has an aftermarket country homes camper poptop. i like those because they seem to have less wind resistance and go up straight:

or just add a poptop to your van. from what i researched it is A LOT easier to fit an asi/riviera or country homes poptop later than westfalia one. an asi/riviera/countryhomes seems to be done in a day..... there is a very good writeup with pictures about that on the web, but cannot find the link right now.....

i plan to buy a syncro and then add a poptop. let me know which way you went, i am very interested.
