I've been ruminating about how to do this too. I have a niece and her hubby
in Anchorage and eventually will go there in my van. Checking the state
ferry charges I found it would be a minimum of $852.00 and 2 days and a
couple hours trip. I think I'd rather drive the entire way and plan a route
allowing me to be a tourist to the max.
The Westy rental place in Bellingham can pick you up at the nearby airport
(van rental co.). Why not call them:

(360)671-6353  ... and see if they have ideas/options. They must deal with
this fairly often.

My niece's husband just returned to Anchorage from AZ and chose the ferry
route to cut down on all the AlCan driving. Very long straight-through drive
when you're not "touristing".
