Hi Mark!

I take it you are getting ash in Anchorage??? WOW!

I remember Augustine erupting a bit in 1986. Wasn't much back then. We got the tiniest trace of ash in Soldotna and Kenai, but Homer got a bit more. Homer lucked out in that the wind was in their favor. If you will go to my web site the very first page is a picture I made of Augustine in 1986 when I was down there. I was standing on the bluff by the highway just before you go down the hill into Homer. It was - obviously - late in the day. I actually got a series of pictures as the sun set, touched the edge of the volcano, then slide behind it out o sight, leaving me with taking the image on my home page. Check it out, and feel free to roam around.

I also lived in Soldotna when Mt. Redoubt blew, as well as Mt. Spur. The Mt. Redoubt eruption was truly spectacular. I have a picture of it and it looks just like an atomic bomb going off. Rising coluum of clouds and dust with a donut of clouds moving out in a ring, all topped by a mushroom shaped cloud!! Spectacular. It gave us lots of ash for days in Soldotna and Kenai, and I gathered it up and used it in my pottery glazes for a long time after.

When Mt. Spur exploded I had a friend in Anchorage collect me a 55 gallon drum of Mt. Spur ash. It went a long way.

Hope the volcano doesn't cause two much trouble.
