The drive is beautiful and well worth consideration, but it is long. It is about 2500 miles from Seattle to Anchorage by road depending on which route you take. The road is usually in good condition, good being a subjective term your opinion may vary depending on expectations and experiences. :>) Anyone considering the trip should pick up a copy of "The Milepost", a book that covers the routes from Seattle to, and including all roads in, Alaska. It gives a mile by mile accounting of the sights and services along the highways and also provides an overview of the history in each area. There are a number of side trips that you can take along the highway, one of our favorites takes you to Skagway and Dyea at the head of the Chilkoot Trail. Those in good shape for backpacking may want to hike the Chilkoot but need to plan far in advance, access to the trail is by permit only and limitied to about 50 per day. The ferry ride through the inside passage is gorgeous and will take you to areas of the State not accessible by car and very different from the rest of Alaska, it is worthy of a trip unto itself.

Any list member that is planning a trip to Alaska is more then welcome to contact us for information, assistance, or stop in on your way through and visit or freshen up. Our door is always open and there is plenty of room in both the house and driveway.
