Years ago I had a guy sideswipe me here in Florida.
The insurance company totaled '82 camper, even though
it was just an awful gouge in the side. Since I
decided to keep the vanagon, I had to "rebuild" it and
have it inspected by the state to prove that it was
safe and driveable. It was a bit of a joke - i just
drove it to the inspection station with the scrape on
the side, during which they determined that it was,
indeed, safe. Florida then issued a new vin number for
the dash which I had to have installed next to the old
one. The reasoning was that others could then see that
it was a "rebuilt salvage" vehicle. I don't know if
they do that in other states or in other countries,
but that was my experience in Florida in the late
'90s.
