I Mike, I forget some of the details but my understanding is the all the brown knobs have the same shaft size and all the grey knobs have the same shaft size but different from the brown ones. You can still buy brown knobs, so if you muck yours up, you can get replacements at BusDepot or Bus-Boys and maybe GoWesty for $7-8/ea I am using dimmer light knobs $3/ea from Lowes because I never could find the grey ones.
