Subject: burred spark plug threads: update
In-Reply-To: <43CFFC7D.90809@qwest.net>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Original message: "I somehow managed to burr the spark plug threads on one cylinder last night. All the tin on these air cooled motors makes changing the plugs much harder than it should be."

UPDATE I picked up a thread chaser last night and after looking everything over I have decided that I can't do this operation through the cooling tin. You wouldn't need to be off by much to really botch this job. So, I am going to drop my engine this weekend so that I can change out the spark plugs. Only in a Vanagon!

Jake,

Remember to put some heavy duty axle grease on the thread chaser also. The grease will capture the shavings to keep them from going into the cylinder. Turn in about a half-turn, then back out about a 1/4 turn to clear the shavings, and just keep going slowly. Pretty easy really.
