Sudhir -

I find if I DON'T change the oil before going to the test, my Hydrocarbons (HC) are too high. I make it a point to change the oil, both air and oil filters, the park plugs and the cap two days before heading off the infamous California Smog II inpsection. If the Ignition Wires and/or Rotor look suspect, I change them out as well. Never tried the alcohol/gas trick myself though. Works everytime for me.
