Howdy,

I just finished up this project in my Vanagon. I went with POR-15 products. None of seam rust in the interior was very advanced, so I didn't use seam filler material. I just cleaned up the rust with a metal brush and wire wheel, treated everything with POR-15 Marine Clean and Metal Ready, then hit it with the POR-15 paint. I am pretty impressed with the strength of the POR-15, the finish seems hard as a rock. I also used a heat gun to drive out any residual moisture from the seams before painting them.

I can't speak to the effectiveness of POR15 vs rust bullet, but I don't think you can go wrong. We are going a long ways toward extending the life of our beloved vans by taking on this project.

Now, are you going to install sound deadening material while you are in there? What kind of insulation are you going to put in? You might as well replace that old dingy wall liner material while you have it out. Hey, as long as the fridge is out you might as well clean it up, install some extra fans and replace the thermal mastic material. Wouldn't this be a great time to install that hard wood floor and reupholster the bench seat! And on and on....

Good luck, Jake

I looked at all the posts in the archives concerned with insulating the body of the vanagon. I want to "paint" the interior body as the first layer to protect the painted sheet metal from rust, or developing more rust. Does anyone have a preference for this?

I came up with rust bullet - www.rustbullet.com - as what on first read, seems the best way to go. Opinions?

Hi Jeff, Just painted the interior in my 85 Westy. & I think this would apply to any style bus. & it concerns the lower body panel seam rust problem. After spraying anti rust solution & letting it soak in. Then wiping the surface clean, I bought a tube of 3M seam sealer. The kind that dry's pretty hard & solid. I applied it heavily along the floor of this panel, In the corner of the channel between the sheet metal & the interior. And, on an angle, to promote "run off" of any moisture that may ever collect there. I also ran it up the sides a bit. I then primer over the top of it. Seam rust..... goooo awwayyy !!! Just food fer thought, YMMV :o) John C. SLC, UT... Just a thought
