You know, when Dixie's motor went last summer I got a medium mileage WBX from a guy on the island who sold it to do a Subaru conversion. At the time I thought he was crazy to spend a fair amount of time and money on a used Subaru when he could buy a GoWesty! 2.2 for about the same money. However, I have been hanging out on the SubaruVanagon List for a couple of months now, and when the present WBX goes, I'll be slipping a SOHC four valve per cylinder 2.5 litre Subaru motor in there. There is a page on the site with horsepower and torque graphs for the 2.1 VW, 2.2 and 2.5Subarus, and they are very convincing! The WBX puts out 80 ft/lbs of torque at 3000 rpm, the 2.2 makes 120 and the 2.5 155!

Let us know which way you go, Rob.
