I used cable-type spring clamp pliers, and there's no way I could've done it without 'em. I bought the $30 chinese knockoff version rather than the $100 high-quality domestic made model. It was perfectly adequate, but by the time I was done they were a little worse for wear. If I had it to do again I'd get the more expensive ones probably. I started off using channel-lock pliers and vise-grips, but that was just too hard. There's really no adequate substitute for spring clamp pliers. This is the one I used, and they're priced properly for their quality ($26). It's funny, but you can find the same exact tool elsewhere for 3 times that.
