Unhooking all three wires from the 02 solved my issue with hesitation and backfires after warming! Runs like a champ! New 02 is ordered and I'm going to check the wiring from the 02 to the ECU tonight to make sure it's in working order...

Sometimes it's the simplest things! The silver lining for me is I learned a lot about my new toy and the pros and cons of these damn vanagons and I also have a whole box of used working parts to take along on the road!

Thanks to all especially for Terry K for answering my relentless questions and convincing me to buy the Digifant book and tech video. I'll feel much confident traveling with my westy.

Shawn

Shawn, The next possibility would be the oxy sensor as we talked about last week.

I thought you had one already.

Check for a broken vacuum line--anywhere.

If you have checked out the compression and it's good, that would certainly eliminate the smoked valve isssue. If you had a bad valve you'd have zero compression.

One question--is the tail pipe all black , like the engine is running rich?
