Hi Sam,

I'm sure this will get a ton of answers, but here goes mine. Any dissenting replies are welcome. Polish is abrasive and is designed to clean the top coat of dead and faded layers of paint. It will "sand" the top layer of dead paint off, more or less. Polish is just a finer grade of rubbing compound, with a little wax in it for protection. Wax is for a protection coat over the "bare" paint. It should then be applied to protect the paint after polishing. This applies to older enamel and synthetic lacquers. The newer two part paints (with a clear coat) should not need a polish, only a glaze, as the polish will leave swirls. PPG offers a great two part hand glaze system. Start with their "Finesse II", and follow up with Imperial Hand glaze. Then the paint will be ready for a good coat of wax for protection. McGuire's makes some of the finest waxes made, a little pricey but great products. The finished shine will depend on a lot of variables, such as faded paint, "Orange Peal" paint, etc.
