I'm pretty sure that the main purpose of the 88 & later rear window vents was to eliminate the exhaust vents that were previously in the side doors. By doing this, they then sealed up the area at the front edge of the doors, which eliminated considerable wind noise. They had to put cabin exhaust vents someplace, the back of the windows was a pretty good place.
