Florian is pretty much right- the normal problem is importing vehicles into the US which do not meet U.S. DOT and EPA specs. (or more correctly have DOCUMENTATION which says that). A common subject on this list are VW Commercials ( Pritsche, Doka, Panel, and LT24-28 Campers) plus various TurboDiesel vehicles which VW of A decided to not bother to import.. There have also been attempts to import certain Brazilian Dokas over the years. I think 6 slipped in under the radar and were licensed as 1968's. Going the other way is somewhat easier. I helped a German friend procure and ship a 1960 Corvette to Germany. Once there, it had to meet TUV specs. They changed the tires to radials, had to do something to the tail lights (perhaps add clamp on ones to the bumper). Oh, plus pay 14% or some big amount of import duty. (but they pay that much on most everything they buy.) American is a misused word.Canadians are Americans, yet don't face quite such challenges when importing grey market cars. What did Malcom have to do to get his new Dehler (?) to comply? I bet it didn't cost him $4500 like US RI's! Al Brase
