Low compression test or a "leak down test major leak".... you have a
problem!!!!!!! anyway, the engine need to be open... wile there, check
everything... yeap, maybe a leak down will tell you that you may need
new pistons and sleeves... but a burned valve is almost the same amount
of labor... (engine out, open and a re-seal), a good job is between 20
and 30 hours... +- a pistons/sleeve set! yea, maybe a 500$ parts more!
but on a 3000$ bill!!!!!!!!!!
low compression = rebuilt... period...
What you guys SHOULD know is that wasser have very good and stong low
end (pistons, sleeve, crank, rods, cam), only on very high millage and
poor maintenance that an engine will break on the low end portion of the
engine, heads are what you should worry about... they were weak on the
type2 and still are on the vanagon...
After an intensif 18 months of work an over 55 Vanagon engines i think i
have a good idea!
Cheers, Ben
