Wow! Is it because it's such an underpowered engine then? I've driven my share of cars over the years and 300rpm at best seems the jump for when the compressor is engaging...but +1000 rpm over base idle?

The idle stabilizer increases rpm under the following conditions to prevent engine stalling:

A/C is on Steering is against the locks one direction or the other (power steering) Cold Engine Start
