I had never heard of pumping your oil out through the dipstick tube until a few months ago when I joined a Mercedes diesel list. Apparently this is very popular among Mercedes DIY folks. The only real advantage cited was the ability to keep from having to crawl under the car and get dirty.

I don't quite understand that as the MB diesel drain plug was conveniently located just about where any plug would be. It was an easy job using the usual method - with a drain pan, etc.

Those diesel engines do get very frequent oil changes, but, as Dennis mentioned, it seems like crud could easily build up in the bottom where some will be left behind every time.
